August&Ko Manufacturing Building

EEplius used the IES Virtual Environment (IESVE) to help the August&Ko Manufacturing building become the first BREEAM certified manufacturing building in the Baltic states. It was also the first manufacturing building to achieve A+ energy efficiency in Lithuania.

The EEplius team used the IESVE to carry out detailed energy and daylight analysis to optimise natural light and reduce energy consumption related to heating and artificial lighting. The team also carried out detailed shading analysis with a custom overhang design, studying solar exposure to choose suitable shading solutions based on the analysis.

Part of the work carried out was to optimise the envelope properties in terms of energy consumption and cost. The team were able to look at a more detailed selection of envelope properties by assessing their influence on energy consumption and initial envelope costs. A control strategies assessment was also carried out for more accurate heating/cooling sizing, aimed at achieving optimal cost.

The purpose of the energy certification procedure was to give labels to the buildings at equal boundary conditions. Dynamic Simulations are free for applying custom boundaries more suitable for each case –user and technology heat gains, hot water usage and schedules, micro climate systems control strategies and passive demand reduction strategies. Therefore, using Dynamic Simulation techniques proved to be more accurate in predicting energy use than just modelling to attain energy certification.

Once construction works is complete the model could be used for simulation based energy audit and fault detection after calibrating the actual model. This is possible due to installed sub-metering devices and data collection systems.

The energy performance certification tools are not meant to fit this need, so we use the IESVE to make more reliable predictions and optimize life cycle costs”
