GWP Project Services Use IES TaP to Improve BREEAM Project Efficiency
IES TaP helps deliver high BREEAM ratings within budget and makes business more profitable

London – 3 July, 2012 – Integrated Environmental Solutions (IES), a provider of integrated performance analysis software and consulting services for sustainable building design and operation, today announce GWP Project Services is successfully using it’s online project management tool IES TaP, on a number of high-profile BREEAM 2008 and 2011 projects. These include the BREEAM 2008 Bespoke assessment of the new visitors centre and distillery for Bombay Sapphire Gin, the BREEAM 2011 assessment of the new National Horseracing Museum and the BREEAM 2011 student residential scheme for the University of Cumbria.
Launched in March this year, IES TaP is a brand new online project tracking tool for BREEAM and Code for Sustainable Homes Assessments (CSH). Uniting the world leading expertise and advanced technology of IES Ltd with the pioneering TaP tool from Track a Project Ltd, the tool is an intelligent online project tracking solution designed by some of the best BREEAM assessors for the benefit of the entire project team. The original TaP tool was launched in October 2010 and GWP have been using this system since March 2011.
Using IES TaP, GWP found that it not only enabled the entire design team to access accurate real-time updates on the level of compliance from any internet connection, but it also made it clear exactly which parts of the project each individual was responsible for delivering. That level of visibility and accountability meant the system was able to automatically issue reminders to people who were late filing important evidence, saving their assessors from arduous chasing exercises so that they could instead focus on providing valuable consultancy and advice.
Barry Rankin, director of GWP Project Services, explains, “Our clients want to create sustainable buildings with low running costs, however the amount they have to invest in the construction remains the same. Anyone can achieve a high BREEAM rating if they throw enough money at it. Our challenge is to help clients achieve a high sustainability rating within budget.
He adds, “To be really cost-effective, green features need to be built in from the outset. We wanted to enable our BREEAM assessors to quickly establish and communicate to the entire design team exactly where the build was in terms of compliance from the outset.”
In the past, GWP typically had to allocate responsibility for achieving each credit to one individual, even though some of the more complex credits require 10-12 pieces of evidence. IES Tap enabled them to break down credits into bite-sized components, with different people responsible for each part according to their individual expertise. That level of accountability gave each person on the team a clear, concise understanding of exactly what they had to do to achieve compliance.
“IES TaP has made our business more profitable by making the BREEAM assessment process flow more efficiently and quickly than ever,” says Rankin. “The system’s transparency means everyone knows who’s due to do what, giving people a real incentive to respect deadlines. Assessments are at less risk of overrun and problems can be identified and addressed early on to achieve the highest ratings.”
He concludes, “Although some clients were initially sceptical about moving from a paper system to a web-based tool, they quickly changed their minds once they saw how easy to use and effective it was. In the past, if I was meeting with a client, I had to print out lots of paper reports. Now I just bring my laptop. I can also review progress from home, on the train, in a café or anywhere with internet access. Going forward, we will be using IES TaP for all our BREEAM assessments. The benefits speak for themselves.”
