Build & Release Engineer

Glasgow, UK

This role will initially be home based, once Covid-19 restrictions are lifted the role will be based in our Glasgow office.

The Role

Working together with Software Development, QA, and IT teams, the successful candidate will be designing and implementing a scalable build environment and continuous integration pipeline.  This includes building and maintaining internal tools that assist teams from writing their first line of code through extensive testing to software release, working with leading edge technologies like Docker, Jenkins, Conan and other modern CI tools. Key responsibilities include the following:

  • Manage the build process for multiple concurrent releases 
  • Design and implement automated build and deployment processes 
  • Maintain various software feature branches using a Source Control System 
  • Design and configure continuous integration build system through collaboration with development and IT teams 
  • Participate in deployment & configuration of the application as needed 
  • Assist the Software Operations Team with deployment responsibilities 
  • Identify opportunities for adopting new tools and techniques from the wider industry
  • Design and implement essential services of a scalable and reliable delivery and development infrastructure
  • Build and maintain internal tools that assist teams from writing their first line of code, through extensive testing to releasing
  • Partner with others to design, build, and maintain these critical services
  • Create and improve automation of the pipeline and optimize it based on various KPI’s
  • Show your keen interest in optimizing build and integration tools at every step of the CI pipeline
  • Document the company’s existing systems architecture and technology portfolio; make recommendations for improvements and/or alternatives.
  • Discuss with senior management to define business requirements for complex systems and infrastructure development.
  • Develop, document, communicate, and enforce a policy for standardising systems and software as necessary.

The Candidate 

We are looking for a Build & Release Engineer, with superior analytical and problem solving skills who has experience collaborating with development groups to establish processes. The successful candidate will demonstrate commitment to quality with a passion for testing and possess excellent oral and written communications skills. Skills and experience include the following:

Essential skills:

  • 2+ years of build/release and configuration management 
  • Proficient with source code management systems (e.g. Perforce, git) 
  • Continuous Integration (CI) tools (Jenkins)
  • Bachelor of Science Degree from an accredited college or university or relevant professional experience 
  • Work directly with agile Application Development to provide daily support aligned with a model of planned releases 
  • Experience with automated deployment tools
  • Experience developing and extending development tools
  • Experience with software installation toolsets (Wix, NSIS, InstallBuilder, InstallShield)
  • Experience with build systems (CMake, msbuild)
  • Experience with containerization technology such as Docker, vagrant and VMware
  • Experience with web services, networking and cloud scalable solutions (DNS, TCP/IP, NGINX, firewalling, Load Balancing, RESTful/OData Services, SAML SSO, LDAP, …)
  • Windows, Unix, Linux and shell scripting skills
  • Strong ability to work independently as well as with highly cross-functional teams

Desirable skills: 

  • Applied programming skills and experience e.g. (C++, C#, JavaScript, SQL, PHP, Python etc)
