BCA’s Super Low Energy (SLE) Building Technology Roadmap

BCA’s Super Low Energy (SLE) Building Technology Roadmap

In 2018, I had the privilege of being part of the expert team put together to develop BCA’s Super Low Energy Buildings Technology Roadmap. This document was developed to address challenges and harness opportunities provided by Super Low Energy (SLE) buildings that are 60-80% more energy efficient over 2005 levels. BCA partnered with industry and academia, including the Energy Research Institute @NTU (ERI@N) and Solar Energy Research Institute of Singapore (SERIS), to jointly develop a Technology Roadmap that charts the pathways towards SLE via development, pioneering and adoption of technologies.

We are proud to be part of the team that worked in the background to ensure that the roadmap developed was of the highest quality.

The Roadmap examines a wide spectrum of emerging energy technologies, analyses their interaction and integration, and explores their feasibilities in Singapore’s tropical and urban context. Through technology trending and fore sighting, the Roadmap outlines the broad strategies to help the industry design and develop cost-effective SLE buildings.

IES technology was used to quantify, verify and optimize a select suite of emerging energy technologies to allow the team to understand the impact of each solution.

The roadmap has identified and prioritised more than 60 key technologies and strategies, charting the pathways of ZEB/SLE technology development in Singapore’s urban tropical context. It makes recommendations for future research and technology development directions to maximise the benefits of innovations, including greater focus on technology translation and co-innovation. It also provides insights into cost effective solutions for implementation, and recommends driving wide adoption of SLE through the BCA Green Mark scheme.

We look forward to the roadmap getting translated from a document to reality in the coming decades in Singapore and continue to work closely with the BCA to ensure their evolving goals have the best technology support with our suite of solutions.
