Creating Net-Zero Carbon Buildings

Creating Net-Zero Carbon Buildings

For the last 26 years’ IES technology has helped make almost one million buildings more energy efficient. From the very beginning our founder and CEO, Don McLean, understood that in order to make a real difference in reducing the energy consumption of buildings, proper 3D modelling and measurement tools had to be integrated into the design process. His objectives were to overcome many of the obstacles to the uptake of building simulation products and he realized that the only way to make these concepts and ideas effective within the design process was to develop them in a fully commercial environment.

As we strive towards meeting zero carbon targets and reducing the impacts of climate change, we are seeing more and more of our customers using our technology to create net-zero carbon buildings. Designing for performance by using physics-based modelling at the start of the design process is key to this. Traditionally, in the UK, modelling is often just carried out for compliance. However, we are starting to see a clear industry shift as more industry led rating systems and processes place an increased focus on performance-based modelling to achieve low energy, zero-carbon and healthy buildings.

The industry has come a long way already, and while there is still a way to go, we wanted to take the opportunity to celebrate the zero-carbon ambition out there by showcasing the fantastic work some of our customers and IES consultants have achieved.

From University campuses to office and residential blocks, here are some great examples of net-zero carbon building projects:

Catalyst Building, Washington State

McKinstry used the IESVE to help meet zero-energy certification goals for this project. Covering around 150,000 sqft, the zero-energy, zero-carbon building will be the largest to receive the International Living Future Institute’s (ILFI) Zero Energy Certification. It will also be one of the first buildings to be certified zero carbon by ILFI.

BCA Academy: Zero Energy Building

IES was asked by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA), Singapore to assess and identify opportunities to achieve optimal building performance in the existing 3-storey Zero Energy building on their Academy Campus. Using IES ERGON linked to its VE software, IES Consulting created a highly calibrated and detailed model of the building from real operational data obtained via the Building Management System (BMS).

Limerick Positive Energy Block

As part of the pioneering EU Horizon 2020 funded +CityxChange (Positive City Exchange) project, IES have been using their ICL Digital Twin technology to help create Limerick’s first Positive Energy Block.

We realise that no single solution can solve the issue of decarbonising the built environment in isolation. A holistic community approach, which also engages the citizens and technology providers must be taken.

Our ICL technology suite uses a unique integration of physics-based simulation, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to create digital twins of any community/group of buildings to analyse all the various decarbonisation options, identify and weigh up the risks and potential savings - prior to implementation - and monitor progress towards net-zero targets over time.

This is a real, tangible solution for how we decarbonise the built environment. To find out more about how the ICL can be deployed as part of a Complete Zero-Carbon Process, visit: https://www.iesve.com/zero-carbon or contact the IES team today.
