VE User of the Year Award Academic Runner-Up: Quynh Tran Xuan, Waterford Institute of Technology

This week we highlight the excellent work of our Academic runner-up Quynh Tran Xuan, a Sustainable Energy Engineering student from Waterford Institute of Technology

For Quynh’s entry she presented her research for her Masters course at the University which investigated the exchange of information between Revit Autodesk and IESVE

Niall Gibson (IES UK) Interoperability between digital platforms is key for project delivery. This is another great example of the openness and flexibility of IESVE to exchange data across multiple platforms. This is ingrained throughout all that IES do and applies to all of our technology. IES brings Analysis and Performance to BIM, a vital element to understanding the buildings performance and our mission of Net Zero Carbon.”

The basis of Quynh’s research was that:

‘Building Information Modelling (BIM) tools bring many advantages to reduce the impacts of the construction process on the environment by cooperating with Building Energy Modelling (BEM) software in different stages of the design process. According to the US Green Building Council, 70% of the commitments related to environmental impacts are decided in the first 10% of the design process. The cooperation of all members in the design process with the same input data is necessary to achieve energy and carbon reduction goals before Schematic Design stage. Therefore, BIM has many opportunities to take part in solving issues related to sustainable building design.’

The main aim of her research was to demonstrate the challenges that architects and engineers are facing in the interoperability process through a case study that could help to solve problems and improve the working effectively for users in the sustainable design and construction field.

Her findings discussed the technical challenges of interoperability between Revit Autodesk and IESVE, and demonstrated how models can robustly be exchanged between the two platforms to support building performance analysis.

Many congratulations to Quynh Tran Xuan on this award and we wish her all the best with her future research.
