IES Join Host of Major Industry Stakeholders in Built Environment Virtual Pavilion for COP26

IES is proud to be part of a coalition of almost 100 partner organisations across the built environment sector who will support the delivery of a Built Environment Virtual Pavilion, ahead of the UN’s COP26 Climate Summit scheduled to take place in Glasgow this November.

With the UKGBC acting as secretariat, the Virtual Pavilion aims to give the built environment sector a voice at COP26, and generate a reach and legacy that can stretch beyond COP itself. The Pavilion will comprise an exhibition of global exemplar projects and places, within a bespoke virtual reality (VR) space, as well as a major series of events and downloadable content – to include keynotes, panel discussions and more.

Speaking on COP26 and the Pavilion our Founder and CEO, Don McLean said:
“We are proud to be standing side by side with so many industry organisations with the united mission to emphasise to the world the major role that the built environment has to play in decarbonisation and the fight against climate change. Buildings are a key part of our society and if we are to make the planet a better place to live for future generations then the built environment needs to be up front and central to government investment and zero carbon strategies. It is fantastic to see the industry coming together to emphasise the important role the built environment has to play in addressing all of this year’s COP themes.

With COP26 being hosted in Glasgow, the city where it all began for IES, it presents an exciting time and with it an array of opportunities to show the world the impact our digital twin technology is having on cutting carbon and combatting climate change. The technology to enable the decarbonisation of the entire world’s buildings and cities is here at our fingertips. However, it needs to adopted much more quickly if countries are to deliver on the ambitious zero-carbon targets they have promised.”

IES joins the Pavilion as a Commercial Partner amongst some of its technology users such as AECOM, Arup, Mott MacDonald and Buro Happold.

In a statement Julie Hirigoyen, Chief Executive at UKGBC said:
“The eyes of the world will be on COP26, for what must be a key milestone moment – a historic turning point in our battle against climate change. It is an opportunity for nations, cities, businesses and civil society to demonstrate that the Paris Agreement is effective, momentum is unstoppable and – perhaps above all else – we are moving from targets to action.

“The built environment is fundamental to many of the themes of COP26. It has a critical role to play in mitigating climate change, responsible for 39% of energy related CO2 emissions and is central to building resilience against climatic extremes too late to avoid, through nature-based solutions. It is key, also, to the aspiration of building back better after COVID.”

The Built Environment Pavilion is just one of the many activities IES is involved in leading up to the COP26 summit, with many events involving industry partners, project partners and our customers happening in the coming months.
