VE User of the Year Award 2023: And the winners are…

Based on popular demand we’re delighted to have brought back our VE User of the Year award. The award sought to find the most innovative use of the VE on a project, either commercial or academic, and we were delighted to receive some fantastic entries.

Our judges had some tough decisions to make, but after much deliberation they have selected our VE User of the Year Global Winner alongside a number of regional prize winners.

Our congratulations to:

Global Winner: our ‘VE User of the Year’ - Syed Asmar Ul Hassan, Hoare Lea - Botanic Place (main entry) and Devonshire Gardens, Cambridge

Academic Project Winner - Akief Hakim bin Azman, Graduate from Kolej Kemahiran Tinggi MARA Sri Gading, Malaysia - Dewan Darul Takzim Hall

Best European Entry - Riccardo Armari, Rise Hospital, Italy

Best South American entry - Alexander Beleño, GreenLoop - Laboratory Complex, Colombia

Best Australasian entry - Karan Sinsinwar, AECOM - Founders Memorial, Singapore

Best American Entry - Weijun Allen Mei, Cyclone Energy

Best Canadian entry - Edge Consultants (this was not one user but rather as a team) -  New St Paul’s hospital, British Columbia

Special congrats to Syed Asmar Ul Hassan from Hoare Lea, our Global Winner, crowned VE User of the Year for 2023. His winning entry was the Botanic Place office scheme project in Cambridge, which is targeting WELL Core Platinum, BREEAM outstanding & high NABERS rating. A unique HVAC approach was followed with perimeter only trench heating & cooling with fresh air through pressurized floor plenums. To illustrate the anticipated operational energy yield of the project, an energy model was fabricated utilizing intricate Apache HVAC networks within IESVE.

Speaking on the quality of entries received this year, our head judge Craig Wheatley said:

“All of this year’s prize-winning entries showcased great innovation. As the world begins its decarbonisation journey VE Users are showing their expertise designing buildings that by any measure are outstanding both in design and in operation. Our winner is a prime example of the consideration and care needed to produce highly sustainable buildings that promote health and well-being.”

We’d like to thank all who submitted entries to the 2023 awards, and offer congratulations to all of our prize winners. The standard of the entries was extremely high, and we were delighted to see such innovative uses of the VE on a number of different project types.

We will be publishing case studies on all our prize winners over the coming weeks and months, so watch this space.
