In June 2024, IES hit a major milestone. We turned 30 years old. To mark this milestone, we have created a special report to reflect on the progress that IES and the built environment sector has made over the last three decades, the challenges we have faced, and what the next 30 years might have in store.

Since being founded in 1994, IES has been pioneering climate technology to support the design, retrofit and operation of better performing buildings. We’re proud to have supported the AEC industry, property owners and operators in understanding how their buildings work, delivering the tools and insights they need to save costs, carbon emissions, and energy.

The world has changed a lot over the last 30 years, driven by a range of environmental, political, economic, and societal factors. Building legislation has evolved, global events have shifted the ways in which we live and work, and climate change has become an increasingly pressing issue. As we look ahead to the next 30 years, we’ll see the world in which we live continue to change at scale and pace – and the work that IES does become more important than ever.

We stand at a critical juncture for our environment. The real-life consequences of climate change are increasingly prevalent, as global temperatures and instances of extreme heat, rainfall, drought, and sea levels rise.

We know that our mission to decarbonise the built environment and help meet global climate targets is not without its challenges. However, amidst these challenges, innovations in renewable energy and sustainable practices are advancing rapidly. Communities worldwide are increasingly mobilising for climate action, and businesses are recognising the economic opportunities in sustainability. By leveraging technologies – particularly in the built environment - we can turn the tide on climate change and create a healthier, more equitable world for future generations.

Drawing on the real-life experiences of our CEO and Founder, Don McLean, and the IES team, this special ‘30 Years of Climate Hurt’ report examines key milestones from the past 30 years and explores what has been delivered, what has changed, and what has failed to be achieved to date. It also features the exclusive findings of our industry survey, exploring what built environment professionals expect to see over the next 30 years.
