Did you miss our recent retrofit masterclass with edie? The session is now available to watch on demand.
Last week, IES joined forces with edie for a live masterclass as part of their Built Environment Sustainability Sessions. This online event served up a packed afternoon of content with two back-to-back sessions, all dedicated to providing businesses and built environment professionals with tools and tips to improve existing building performance and conduct effective retrofit projects.
With more than 70% of buildings that exist today expected to still be operational by 2050, retrofitting has a crucial role to play in meeting corporate, national and global net-zero targets. However, while retrofit solutions are often technically sound, resulting in up to 50-75% fewer carbon emissions than rebuilding, they often face challenges in stakeholder acceptance and adoption, or simply knowing which options will deliver the best outcomes.
Our Head of ICL Operations, Laurie McKelvie, addressed some of these common challenges in the second of the afternoon’s two sessions - From buy-in to monitoring: Executing the plan for a long-lasting successful retrofit. Through his presentation, Laurie explored the crucial role of energy models and dynamic digital twin tools to help businesses optimise their existing building performance, pre- and post-retrofit, and how they can ensure targeted interventions that balance carbon reduction alongside other key considerations, such as comfort and cost.
Laurie also shared learnings from real case study project examples, including a large bank portfolio in Singapore in which our IESVE software was used to create a calibrated energy model to virtually test the impact of various retrofit and energy conservation measures (ECMs). The models, which were calibrated within 98% accuracy of the actual buildings in operation, successfully identified 27% potential electricity savings across the portfolio through the proposed ECMs and determined an additional 19% of the portfolio’s energy demand could be met through PV installations. The session also touched on our work with the University of Liverpool, who recently used our IES Live platform to verify £25K cost savings and 23% energy savings from a recent HVAC refurbishment, in the 9 months following implementation. These savings have continued to grow over time.
The session also featured insights from Simon Vernon-Harcourt, Design and Planning Director at City and Country, who shared his perspective from working extensively in the conversion of historic and cultural heritage buildings.
If you missed the live session, or to recap on the discussion points, you can now watch the recording on demand (IES session starts at the 47:10 mark).
