How Arup is Enhancing Interoperability with IESVE and Pollination

As an early adopter, Arup has been utilising the Pollination Revit to IESVE plug-in since its official release. Arup’s implementation of the plug-in has transformed its modelling workflow across multiple projects in the UK, Europe, and Middle East, saving significant modelling time whilst optimising the design process.

Arup has been working with diverse building types ranging from high-rise commercial buildings to data centres. Prior to implementing the Pollination for IES solution, the team faced significant interoperability challenges when converting BIM models to analytical models. These challenges included the inability to interact with models during export, oversimplification of complex geometries, and the substantial time investment required for model conversion.

The traditional "black box" workflows presented persistent issues such as problems handling complex shading elements, splitting architectural models into different analysis models, missing windows and doors, misaligned surfaces, and difficulties combining individual glazing elements. These challenges were time-consuming and limited the team's ability to fully explore design alternatives.

Since adopting the Pollination Revit to IESVE plug-in, Arup has transformed its modelling approach. The solution enables real-time interaction with models during export, visual identification of potential issues, and direct export to native VE .gem files. The flexibility of partial model export—allowing export of single floors or even individual rooms—has been particularly valuable for integrating updates from the latest BIM models throughout the design process.

For Arup’s projects, the team utilizes multiple IESVE applications including VE-Navigator for ASHRAE 90.1, VE-DSM, ApacheHVAC, and ASHRAE Loads. The integration of these tools with the improved model conversion workflow has significantly enhanced the team’s analytical capabilities.

The enhanced workflow has delivered substantial benefits to both Arup and its clients. The ability to explore parametric design considerations in early design stages pushes design decisions toward optimal building performance. Using a central model for load calculation, energy analysis, comfort assessment, and daylighting modelling saves significant effort and allows engineers to focus on optimisation rather than model conversion.

"Pollination Revit to IESVE plug-in enables modelling teams to speed up and to encourage high performance building design from early stage through detailed design. This workflow offers our team more valuable time to analyse alternatives that we invest in fine tuning the performance of our design considerations. From our recent projects, the workflow helps to reduce the modelling time significantly.

The plug-in is one of the best tools for exporting analytical models from Revit. The tool offers lots of features for improving our modelling workflow and enables reliable interoperability between IESVE and Revit/Rhino.”
