IES’s partnership with Ladybug Tools makes importing Revit and Rhino models into IESVE via Pollination easier and more efficient than ever before. 

The need for Pollination, particularly in relation to Rhino, is clear: there has previously been no direct method for transferring Rhino models into IESVE.

For Revit users, there have been existing routes via gbXML or IFC exports. However, anyone who has used these methods knows the limitations and frustrations that often arise. A major challenge stems from the inevitable inaccuracies when converting an architectural model into a wireframe energy model — differences in wall thicknesses, room heights, and other variations can cause overlaps, slivers, and other geometry issues, often resulting in an invalid model.

For a successful gbXML or IFC transfer, the Revit model must be perfectly prepared to avoid errors — and even then, complex geometries can sometimes prove too difficult to handle.

Pollination provides a much more user-friendly and visual workflow for transferring Revit (and Rhino) models into IESVE. It acts as an intermediate application between Revit and IESVE, allowing users to identify and correct errors independently of the original design model. Thanks to its powerful visualisation capabilities, Pollination removes much of the guesswork associated with traditional gbXML or IFC transfers, leading to significant time savings. Additionally, Pollination can handle far more complex geometries than gbXML or IFC workflows typically allow due to its ability to export using the .GEM file type – the IESVE’s native file format - simplifying the import process down to one single file translation. This results in faster imports as well, especially in larger projects with thousands of rooms.
