A New Chapter for IES: Welcoming Christine Mullin as our CEO

At IES, our mission has always been clear: to decarbonise the built environment and deliver high performing, sustainable buildings that are better for our planet, and the people that use them. For more than three decades, our Founder, Don McLean, has guided us with his vision and a relentless commitment to tackling the challenges of energy efficiency and climate change. Thanks to Don and our incredible team of staff, customers and partners, our technology has now been applied to over 1.5 million buildings worldwide – encompassing iconic projects from Heathrow’s Terminal 5, the Dubai Opera House, and MGM Las Vegas.

Today, we’re excited to share the next step in our journey as we welcome Christine Mullin as our new Chief Executive Officer. Christine brings significant senior leadership experience across international technology and B2B SaaS operations, with a proven track record in scaling businesses, driving growth, and delivering successful outcomes.

Prior to joining IES, Christine has held senior leadership roles at Microsoft UK, Bookatable, Dext, and MetaPack. Most recently, Christine served as the Global COO of Texthelp, a leading provider of assistive software to both education and corporate organisations. Christine has also recently completed the MIT AI and Machine Learning: Leading Business Growth programme.

What drew Christine to IES is the same thing that drives all of us here - a belief in the power of IES and its technology to make a real difference in optimising the energy performance of our global built environment to help enable a sustainable planet.

In her own words, Christine comments:

“IES has an exceptional reputation for innovation and impact, having enabled the energy-efficient design, retrofit and operation of some of the most well-known buildings and infrastructure projects in the world. In doing so, we have empowered countless architects, engineers and construction firms, building owners and operators to reduce costs, enhance the occupant experience, and lower the carbon impact of our global built environment.

“With demand for intelligent climate tech solutions only growing globally, this is an important moment for the business. I’m honoured to get the opportunity to build on Don’s remarkable legacy, working with the outstanding IES team and our broader network of industry partners to lead IES into its next phase of growth. Together, we can empower more organisations to make confident, data-driven decisions that help decarbonise the built environment at scale.”

Don is of course known and respected by our building performance community around the world, and will continue to play an important role as he steps into a new position as Non-Executive Director, supporting Christine and the wider leadership team.

Reflecting on the journey so far, Don comments:

“When I founded IES just over 31 years ago, the conversation around buildings was only beginning to recognise the importance of energy security and environmental impact. Since then, we’ve seen the climate agenda move to the centre of global policy and business, and I’m proud that IES has played an important role in that transformation.

“From pioneering the use of digital technology in building performance to contributing to major global projects, the company has always been driven by innovation and a determination to make a difference. I am so proud of everything that we have achieved so far. But there is still much more to do if we are to meet the pressing challenges our society faces when it comes to mitigating the worst impacts of climate change and the role that our buildings play within that.

“While I remain committed to furthering the decarbonisation of our global built environment, now feels the right time to hand over the reins to Christine, whose experience, vision, and drive will help to take IES into its next exciting phase. I look forward to supporting her and the team as IES continues its vital mission.”

Christine’s appointment follows our landmark 2024 strategic investment from the Apax Global Impact Fund, which is helping to accelerate our expansion and mission to decarbonise buildings around the world.

We’re entering an exciting new chapter – one that builds on our history while looking firmly to the future. With Christine at the helm, Don’s continued support and our incredible network of customers and partners by our side, we’re ready to take our mission further than ever before.

Thank you for being a part of this journey with us.
