3D Urban Energy Modelling of the Dublin Town District

Dublin City Urban Energy Model

Dublin Town is the collective voice of businesses in the Dublin city centre, working to create a better city experience for all. IES was engaged by them in 2023 to create a 3D urban energy model of the district that is now publicly available.

IES’ Role & Technology

IES is a global climate tech company delivering innovative technology solutions and consultancy services to decarbonise the built environment. Over the last 30 years, we have built a solid reputation as the leading innovator of integrated performance-based analysis and we’re now home to the largest building physics analytics team in the world.

Urban Energy Model Creation

On this project, IES utilised its urban energy modelling software iCD, stakeholder engagement platform iCIM, and advanced data analytics platform iSCAN. The model was based on information gathered from the business members of Dublin Town, property managers in the district, as well as from publicly available datasets.

Decision Support Analysis

To align with Dublin City’s mission objectives, a range of future scenarios were investigated by modelling different, higher cost, retrofit strategies, such as heating system or plant changes, building fabric upgrades, renewable energy generation, and waste/district heating options. The scenarios covered a series of retrofit levels: shallow, medium, deep and full renovation.

FREE SEAI Energy Audits

As a Dublin City business, you can connect with IES for further support. IES expert consultants are fully qualified SEAI accredited Non-Domestic Energy Assessors, Registered Energy Auditors and Certified Energy Managers. We have performed over 3,000 energy projects including numerous Energy Audit and Irish Compliance ones.

If you have less than 250 employees and less than €50 million turnover, with an annual energy spend of €10,000 or greater, then you can use the SEAI Voucher Scheme to access a free energy audit.

For this, IES will undertake a professional evaluation of energy, that identifies areas of waste and opportunities for improvements and savings. We assess at least 12 months of utility bills and undertake a site survey, in order to :

  • Identify all major consumers of energy
  • Identify low-cost/no-cost measures for reducing energy use
  • Provide a list of potential capital improvements
  • Calculate energy, cost and carbon emission savings
  • Prepare a report for each building documenting the findings

IES Live: Evidence-based Decarbonisation Roadmaps

IES can take the analysis done for Dublin City further and implement it in detail on your individual building or buildings. Developing and tracking its evidence-based net-zero journey towards your chosen target date, using our IES Live technology.
