SwEEtch

Integrated tool chain for decarbonization roadmaps and investment plans towards efficient district heating and cooling system

Project Summary

DHC SwEEtch supports district heating and cooling network (DHCN) operators in planning their decarbonization roadmaps for 2050. Funded under the LIFE-2023-CET-DHC call, the project delivers technical assistance through a structured “4-link support chain”: Mapping, Modelling, Assessing, and Investment Planning.

By leveraging expertise and advanced tools from the consortium partners (IESRD, R2M, RINA-C, EURAC, EIHP, KAPE), DHC SwEEtch will implement its methodology across 10 case studies in Italy, Croatia, and Poland. This includes 5 Pioneer Case Studies with committed DH operators and 5 Replicator Case Studies, that will be selected through an open call.

Additionally, the project fosters a pan-European DHC SwEEtch Community of over 80 stakeholders via the CONSTRUCTION21 platform, ensuring knowledge-sharing, training, and replication of best practices across the EU.

With its comprehensive approach, DHC SwEEtch accelerates the transition towards efficient, low-carbon district heating and cooling systems, aligning with EU energy goals and local sustainability plans.

IES' Role

IES leads the development of the second link in the project's support chain, focusing on DHCN modeling and dynamic simulations. IES's digital twin suite will serve as the core technology for creating comprehensive models of district heating and cooling networks, from the demand and supply perspectives. These models will assess the impact of future renovation scenarios, aligning with local regulations and the specific needs of each pilot, compared to a baseline model. Various decarbonization technologies will be integrated into these scenarios, with simulations conducted to identify the most effective solutions. Additionally, IES will also participate in providing a user-friendly digital dashboard through the use of IES Live to facilitate the seamless handover of investment plans to DH operations. This interface will consolidate all relevant data, empowering operators with the insights needed for informed decision-making.
