IES Consulting supported Vinci Construction on this landmark dual tower project in Paris, helping the project comply with LEED v4 requirements and to guarantee the targeted certification level of LEED Platinum.
IES Consulting were commissioned to provide LEED energy modelling services to support Vinci Construction in targeting the desired LEED v4 Platinum certification for the landmark Tours DUO in Paris.
Designed by Ateliers Jean Nouvel, the two impressive towers will transform the skyline of Eastern Paris. DUO-1, the larger of the two towers, will stand at 180 metres tall and encompass a range of offices, an auditorium, corporate restaurant and shops, over 39 levels. Meanwhile, DUO-2, at 125 metres, will provide a similar selection of office space, corporate restaurant and shops, in addition to a hotel, comprising of 139 rooms, with panoramic restaurants and a bar, over its 28 levels. At the “summit” of each tower, will be a panoramic meeting space (DUO-1) and a large roof-covered terrace facing the Seine and historic Paris (DUO-2) respectively. Both towers will share a common infrastructure consisting of 9 levels of parking, archives and technical rooms.
As would be expected on a project of this scale, the project required complex energy modelling, which IES Consulting were able to perform in the IES Virtual Environment (IESVE) software. The consultants’ key role in this project was to support Vinci Construction in performing a PRM 2010 study of the two towers, according to ASHRAE 90.1-2010 Appendix G, to target the Energy & Atmosphere (E&A) credits required to ensure the project achieved its targeted LEED Platinum certification.
The consultants were able to create energy models of both towers within IESVE, using the plans and technical specifications provided by the client. They were then able to investigate a range of factors in the proposed design and compare against the ASHRAE 90.1-2010 baseline reference model to calculate the potential energy and associated cost savings. This included analysis of the proposed HVAC systems, including the buildings’ connection to the local district heating and cooling network, and schedules across the various equipment, ventilation and heat recovery strategies employed within the proposed design. This included demand control ventilation, fan coil and CRAC units, as well as reversible radiant floors and panels. The team also assessed the proposed lighting and controls and Service Hot Water (SHW) provision, in addition to the impact of installing proposed solar PV panels to each tower.
IES Consulting succeeded in demonstrating compliance with LEED v4 requirements and assisting in meeting the targeted Platinum level certification.
“IES was in charge of the ASHRAE calculation on the Duo Towers, Paris, needed for the LEED certification of the project. The consultant was very helpful and comprehensive and I’ve learnt a lot over the several meetings we had during the project. IES Consulting were always available to answer questions and helped us to easily follow progress on the ASHRAE calculations to improve the result.”
