How do I extract simulation results from an aps file using VEScripts?

The VE python API allows access to simulation results (i.e. *.aps files) to extract data from any variables included in the aps file. The PDF linked to this article gives an overview of how you can set this up in a script, the script is included here for convenience so you can paste it into the VEScripts Editor and run it or modify it further.
