Fix Failing Part L2 When Actual Energy Is Lower
I’ve just performed a PartL2 simulation and when looking at the BRUKL certificate I can see the total energy consumption for the actual building is lower than the notional but the BRUKL shows the building as failing. Please explain!
In order to pass Part L2 2010 the actual building carbon emission rate (BER) must be lower than the notional building carbon emission rate (TER). Looking at the energy end use table on the BRUKL certificate will give us a good idea of how the actual building performs against the notional building but when it comes to looking at the overall Pass/Fail result for PartL2 compliance it is important that we consider the Carbon Emissions associated with each end use instead of just looking at the overall energy consumption.

In the following example the total energy consumption for the actual building is lower than the notional.

Looking at the end uses closer though we can see that lighting is the predominant energy consumer within the actual building and it is far greater than the notional.
The actual & notional building Heating systems both have Natural Gas as their fuel type which has a Carbon Emission Factor of 0.198 kgCO2/kWh.
For Auxiliary & Lighting (where the notional is lower than the actual) the fuel is electricity which has a Carbon Emission Factor of 0.517 kgCO2/kWh
Using this information along with the Energy End Uses to calculate the Carbon Emissions the actual building emission rate (BER) has been correctly calculated as 35.1 and the notional building emission rate (TER) is 27.4.
