FAQ – How do I model a curved roof in ModelIT?

To create a curved roof in the VE, please follow the simple steps below.

Step-by-step guide

The image above shows a plan view of a rectangular zone which will be used as a base for the curved roof.  To create a curved roof, firstly change the view to an elevation view – i.e. Right, Left, Front or Back.

Click on “Draw Extruded Shape”.  Once Extruded Shape has been selected the Shape Settings dialog box will appear.

Now the model view has been changed to Right, input the DEPTH of the zone/building.  In this model the depth is 7.5m.

NOTE: The depth and room name can be edited after you create the zone if necessary

Now that we have selected the Extruded Shape and set up the depth of the zone, start to draw the base of the roof zone (red line above shows the base of the roof zone).

Select “Draw Arc”

After clicking “Draw Arc”, the Arc Settings box appears (see image below).

Within the Arc Settings dialog box there are two settings;

  • Sweep - is the direction the arc will be created.
  • Segments - the default number of segments is 10 however this can be increased for a smoother curve. The arc created uses default number of segments - 10

NOTE: Increasing the segments also increases the number of surfaces so this may not be required.

The sample model requires the arc to go from right to left, therefore the sweep must be -90.

This width of the zone is 4.0m therefore the arc origin should be placed at 2.0 as this is the centre point of the zone.

By setting the sweep to -90 the arc is only created for half of the zone, so click on the left-hand mouse button once again to create another arc.  The curved roof has been created, see image below.

SUMMARY OF STEPS

  • Select Extruded Shape, draw the base of the curved roof.

  • Select Draw Arc

  • Arc Settings dialog box appears - Check sweep and segments – left to right is 90, right to left is -90.

  • Place Arc Origin in position and click on the left hand mouse button to create the arc, repeat this process until arc is complete.

I hope this helps.

Kind Regards
Rosemary
